Nonkululeko

Saoirse, unless you are Irish is a hard name to remember. I have met only one person so far here in Hout Bay who has even heard of it. So in desperation, I asked the Xhosa child minder at the gym what the Xhosa word for freedom was. Kululeko, or if it refers to a female, then Nonkululeko. She is now known by all the black staff at the shops I go to and all the gym staff as Nonkululeko! I guess that is easier than Saoirse for them!!!

She is a sturdy 4 and a half months old and is still drinking plenty and getting longer every day. She seems luckily to have grown out of her fatty fat pants stage and is in the process of growing into her body weight. She was measured and weighed 10 days ago and is now 7 kilos! At 4 months they start babies on a baby rice which they call cereal here. It is a few spoon fulls mixed with formula. They say this gets them ready for the actual food at about 6 months. They explained how it helps get their tongue used to the motion of pushing food back and swallowing it. I was wondering if any parents reading this might share their experience with me or give me advice as to what and when they gave their baby? I am also conscious that whatever brand I end up feeding her will have to be an international one that is sold in Brazil, USA and Ireland as well as here in South Africa. I do not want to chop and change all the time. Then again, maybe it is not bad for the baby? Oh and if possible, we want to avoid cooking food. It is still very warm here, will be even warmer in Brazil and we will have fairly basic cooking facilities on the boat with no microwave, so I was hoping that whatever food it is, could be made with room temperature formula milk or water…

I would love to read any advice, feedback or experiences you have had with feeding.

PS she is rolling over all the time onto her front now. She is still not really able to roll back onto her back though so gets frustrated then!

Hi there all of you

Good to catch up with all your news and sorry this is my first post to you. I love all the photos!!

Ok, just a few thoughts on the baby food.

I wouldnt worry about changing brands, I think i pretty much tryed every brand with Tamara and she turned out ok ! Baby cereal/rice is great to start with a bit of mashed banana. To be honest I used jars when Tamara was that age and up until she was really ready to eat what we were eating...be it mashed to death !
I know here you can buy powder food for babys...again i think you mix it with the formula...this might be good for on the boat? Mashed sweet potatoe is a great one and most babies love it...again mix with a bit of formula. Will you have space on the boat for jars of food?...coz if you do, its the way to go...for the moment anyhow. Formula is still and will be for some time a big part of thier diet so dont panic too much. Can you buy/use one of those hand held blenders for on the boat?...maybe you can get battery operated ones?...at least then you can blend whatever you both are eating... otherwise its building up some muscle time !

Sorry I havnt been of much help and should I think of any other ideas I will get back to you.

Love to you all Allison & Tamara xx

Hi Jackie,

Just about resurfacing after the show in Dublin, which went quite well..
Re the babyrice, my boys never really liked the stuff to be honest( regardless of the brand), as it's pretty bland and as babies LOVE sweet things, our house became a bit of a fruitchopping/cooking parlour for a while, as we had to cook apples/pears and puree it. That was with the first baby, second baby got it all out of jars, as it's quite a bit of work chopping all the fruit.. But I do agree, babies have to get used to get the food in their mouths and learn how to swallow it, so that's definately a correct theory!
They loved( and still love) bananas, but remember it's quite rich, and could lead to constipation if too much is eaten( and then you give them applepuree :) and that should solve it.
Re her name, well, I suppose it's all what you are used to, but that name that they think is easy, I find quite difficult, but then again, I am not used to that name!
Believe it or not, we had SNOW here two days ago. you are soo lucky to be somewhere warm!
I am amazed that she is able to roll over....before you know she'll be on her feet! Or crawling!!
Talk soon!
Katleen
